this year i renovated my bathroom before moving into my new place in the historic core of DTLA.

das badezimmer is a space-time portal & boundless white-gridded black box, equipped with a special red/amber light to double as photo darkroom.

it is already a queer darkroom, an intensely personal retro-fiction layered onto the already existing palimpsest of a fixer-upper unit within a building that's 112 years old – a kind of cut/paste montage facing 7th street – where my friends like to take selfies in the mirrors.

pleasurable fantasy room. escape booth for electronic music. das is all these things for me.

multiple threads & vibes went into the design: outrun/synthwave, 80s queer culture/bathhouse cruising, underground berlin techno, the matrix, a pandemic-long deep dive of HÖR on youtube & last year's travels to vintage east german industrial sites in berlin & leipzig.(JAN-MAR 2023)
